BIR SURENDRA SAI

........................Surendra Sai was born in a small town Khinda about 21miles away from Sambalpur. He had taken birth in the Royal family of Sambalpur. This royal family belonged to the Chowhans of Ajmer who had come to Sambalpur to rule long ago. Sai’s family ruled over Sambalpur for a long period. In the year 1827 King Maharaja Singh died without any child and successor. The British made the head of the state the widow of the King Maharaja Singh to rule over the throne. Later in the year 1833 another person Narayan Singh was made to sit on the throne as the successor who did not belong to the royal family. This was done so that the British could easily take over the state under their rule. Durjay Singh, the Jamindar of Rampur, supported Narayan Singh. The Jamindar’s and Gontiyas of Sambalpur did not accept this. They revolted against the King by killing the old father and minor son of Durjay Singh. Surendra Sai had taken the main lead in this revolt. He revolted against the British because he was neglected for not being allowed to sit on the throne which was lawful. But the British suppressed the revolt and arrested Surendra Sai, Balaram Sai and Bhajanta Sai as the prime accused in the killing of Jamindar case of Rampur. They were sentenced life imprisonment and kept in Hajaribag jail as prisoners.

........................Surendra Sai was trained in horse race, wrestling and battle tricks right from the childhood. He was a great warrior of independent thoughts. He was determined to save his state and birthplace from the British rule. He was only eighteen years in 1827 when he revolted against the British. The British had to fight with him for 13 long years till 1840 until they arrested him by false accusation as a killer. While he was in jail in the year 1857 “Sipahi Bidroh” started in India. He broke through the Hajaribag jail and revolted against the British. He was well versed in “Gorilla Warfare”. The British could not defeat Surendra Sai even after the suppression of the “Sipahi Bidroh.” He was not given sufficient support from others as a result he surrendered on 16th May 1862. After that he was released for sometime but he was once again sentenced to jail in January 1864 and was imprisoned in Asirgad jail. He passed away on 28th February 1884 while he was in jail.

........................He had spent thirty-six years in jail out of his 75 years life span. The British conspiracy sent him to jail thrice. The Oriya community is proud for his immense courage and patriotism. He was married to the daughter of the Jamindar of Hathibari village of Gangapur State. His one and only son was martyred by taking part in the revolt against the British alongwith his father. He was left with a daughter after his death. His prime intention was to drive away the British from India and to be the King of Sambalpur. He sacrificed his life struggling against the British thirty years before the “Sipahi Bidroh” took place.
