In wake of rising cyber crime, cops undergo training

.........CUTTACK: Training on cyber crime and cyber investigation would help police in acquiring special knowledge and skills in handling cyber crime cases in the State successfully, said Director General of Police (DGP) Dr RP Sharma. Speaking at the inauguration of two-day State-level specialised training course on Cyber Security, Cyber Crime Investigation and Forensics, organised by Crime Branch wing of State Police here on Tuesday, Dr Sharma said the number of cyber crime cases has risen this year with 669 cases registered till October-end against 278 last year. Crime Branch police have succeeded in detecting several ATM and employment fraud cases besides those of sexual exploitation and harassment, he added. “Our police officers will learn about the modus operandi of different types of cyber crimes, how to handle and probe the cases, preserve evidence and transmit the seized items to Forensic Science Laboratory,” Sharma said.Also speaking at the event, Crime Branch ADG, Santosh Kumar Upadhyay said forensic experts from different part of the country, from technical field as well as institutional faculties like OCCAC and IIIT will impart training to update police officers with latest skill. Upadhyay informed that the much-awaited Cyber Forensic Laboratory is ready to function and the State Forensic Science Laboratory (SFSL) will add another feather to its existing eight divisions. The infrastructure of SFSL which is being upgraded will be completed by March 2018, he informed. Like other States, cyber crimes are increasing in Odisha with rise in use of cyber space. Different types of malwares, viruses and malicious software are finding their way into the systems while surfing Internet and to curb the menace Cyber Security is important, the DGP said adding that the Cyber Security should be strengthened and upgraded commensurately with the changing situation. Meanwhile, the State Government has approved the proposal for setting up three Cyber Police Stations in Berhampur, Rourkela and Sambalpur. The police stations will start functioning very soon, the DGP added. A proposal has also been sent to the Government for establishment of three more cyber police stations at Jeypore in Koraput, Balasore and Bhubaneswar. Around 90 police officials have participated in the training programme.
