.........CUTTACK: The Madhusudan Law College here was closed sine die on Thursday after a group clash on the campus. The clash ensued following a self-immolation attempt by a girl student in the fray for president post protesting the inaction of college authorities on her complaint against her opponent.
As per reports, Anasuya Lenka and Radha Madhab Das, final year students, were contesting for the post of president. Both claimed to have BJD support. While Lenka claimed to have been nominated by Law, Health and Family Welfare Minister Pratap Jena, Radha Madhab was nominated by Choudwar-Cuttack MLA Pravat Ranjan Biswal.
The contest took an ugly turn on Tuesday when Lenka filed an FIR at Malgodown police station alleging that her rival group had uploaded her photo in the social media and posted some lewd remarks.
Lenka was on dharna on the premises along with her supporters from Wednesday demanding action from college authorities and cancellation of the election.
As no action was initiated, Lenka attempted self-immolation by pouring kerosene on her body alleging that the Principal, who was supporting her rival candidate, would be responsible for her suicide. However, she was rescued by police.Following the incident, the students, who were staging demonstration with Lenka, ransacked college property compelling the authorities to close the college sine die.
After Principal Sukant Kumar Nanda declared sine die at 1.30 pm, supporters of Das staged a dharna in front of the college gate demanding the election to be conducted. The dharna affected movement of traffic on Station Road. Alleging that acting on the instruction of Law Minister, the college authority had declared sine die, the irate students burnt down a number of photos of Jena.
