Ambulance fails pregnant woman again

.........BERHAMPUR: Repeated failure of ambulance services in reaching the doorsteps of pregnant women in case of emergencies, has made a mockery of the facility introduced by the Government, particularly in remote areas. In yet another instance, a pregnant womanís wait for 102 service ended in her delivering her child under a tree in Gochhapada village under Phulbani block of Kandhamal district. On Thursday, Pranta Kanhar of Salaguda village experienced labour pain following which her husband, Bhima, rushed to an Asha worker for help, but she was not available. Later, he rang up both 108 and 102, which did not reach the village. With no other help in sight, a helpless Bhima tried to take his wife on a motorcycle to Gochhapada hospital, about 20 km from their village. On the way, near Mirjarugaon, her pain increased and she took rest under a tree. Leaving her under the watch of local women, Bhima left for Gochhapada hospital and fetched a nurse, who helped Pranta deliver a baby boy under the tree. Soon after, the mother and child were shifted to Gochhapada hospital and later to District Headquarters Hospital at Phulbani. Both mother and newborn are stable and the child has been admitted to SNCU, said Dr Swapneswar Gadnayak, Kandhamal CDMO. He said the allegation of unavailability of ambulance would be probed. The ambulance authorities, on the other hand, said they first received a call for 102 at 3.45 pm from the mobile of one Ranjita Mukhi and at that time, the ambulance nearest to the village at Phiringia was off road due to a technical snag. As a result, the call was diverted to 108, but again, the nearest ambulance at Phulbani DHH was engaged in another case. Similar cases of failure of ambulance service had been reported in Koraput district in March. One Rupai Mandngi of Chakna village under Laxmipur block delivered a child in an autorickshaw. She was being taken to Laxmipur hospital after the calls to ambulance service failed. Another woman was being taken to a hospital on a cot when she delivered her child beside a road.
