Advani, Joshi, Bharti fail to appear in special CBI court

.........LUCKNOW: The Special CBI court has deferred framing of charges against former deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani, former HRD minister Murli Manohar Joshi, Union Minister Uma Bharti as well as three other saffron leaders on Friday in the Babri mosque demolition case as the accused failed to appear in the court on the pretext of personal reasons. The three other leaders include MP Vinay Katiar, Sadhvi Ritambara and Vishnu Hari Dalmia. However, the court directed all six accused to appear before it on May 30 so that charges could be framed then. Special CBI judge SK Yadav cautioned the accused that no further adjournment or exemption from personal appearance would be granted on the next date. The court had fixed Friday, May 26 as the date for framing of charges in compliance with the Supreme Court’s April 19, 2017 order. However, the lawyers —Vimal Kumar Srivastava and Manish Tripathi —representing Advani, Joshi and other four accused moved an application seeking exemption from personal appearance for their clients. Meanwhile, CBI counsels Lalit Singh and BK Yadav opposed the application for exemption saying the court had fixed Friday for framing of charges against the accused and it should be ensured that the accused were present on the next date. Taking note of all the facts and circumstances, the special court accepted the application, moved by the lawyers of Advani and others, in the interest of justice with the condition that the exemption was being accepted for Friday only. The court, which is hearing two separate cases, has already fixed May 30 for framing of charges against the other six accused including Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, Ram Vilas Vedanti, Baikunth Lal Sharma alias Prem Ji, Champat Rai Bansal, Mahant Dharma Das and Satish Pradhan. After the demolition of the disputed structure in Ayodhya on December 6, 1992, two FIRs were lodged. While Crime No. 197 dealt with “demolition of the mosque by kar sevaks” in which Vedanti, Nritya Gopal Das and four others are accused, Crime No. 198 named Advani, Joshi and 20 others for inciting the mob through their speeches and conspiring on the demolition of Babri mosque.
